The Perfume of the Dying

Abstract

This is a personal essay reflecting on the strange scent that becomes prevalent as the author's aunt is in the final stages of metastasized cancer and how that ushers in other sense memories of growing up under this aunt's influence.

Kim O'Connell, Johns Hopkins University

My articles and essays have been published in The Washington Post, The New York Times, Ladies Home Journal, NationalGeographic.com, National Parks, and more, and my short fiction and poetry have appeared in Little Patuxent Review and unFold Poetry. I have been a writing fellow in residence at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and was the first-ever writer in residence at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. I am an adjunct professor in the Johns Hopkins University Master's in Science Writing program.
